Start basic dog training
After your dogs starts to follow your basic commands “NO” and praise like “GOOD”. Now they are ready for the next level of basic exercise. The following exercise should start when your pup’s are around 4 months old.
Command words should be short and simple like “COME HERE”, “SIT”, “DOWN” and “WALK” or “HEEL”. Use a powerful tone of voice but don’t shout. In the beginning owners might have to arrange your dog position when using the command. Do them commands over and over again and be PATIENT!. Owners must keep in mind that you are teaching something to them that are not their natural birth instinct..
The two things that you will need to train your dog is a collar and a leash. The collar that you put on your dog is not to be too tight or too loose. When the collar is on your dogs neck, you should be able to slide your thumb between the collar. As for the leash, should be at least 5 foot long either leather or nylon.
In the beginning when you first use a collar or leash, your dog might not be use to it, so take your time. Firstly put the collar on your dog and the leash hooked up to it. Pull the leash gently and if your dog jerks back, give the leash some slack. Give your dog a praise when he follows you, do this a few days till your dogs are use to the collar and leash but always keep in mind that your dog should be on your left side of your body.
Walk / Heel on command
Position your dog on the left side of the trainer. Use the command “WALK” or “HEEL” then starts walking. Trainer might have to pull the leash a little to make your dog follow you. Walk slowly but if your dog won’t follow you or too far behind, trainer must gently jerk the leash. When your dog comes beside you, give them a praise every time. If your dog is too far ahead, pull the leash back gently till your dogs are at the same level as the trainer. DON’T RUN AND FOLLOW THEM. Try to keep your dog beside you all the time through the training.
STOP on command
After walking the dog for a while, trainer can stop walking and use the command “STOP”. Pull jerk the leash a little to make your dog stop walking. When your dogs stop, give them a praise and a pat on their left shoulder. Follow this training 5-6 times and your dogs will learn automatically on stopping on your command without trainer pulling the leash. Train this training at least 2-3 days.
Sit on command
When your dog can stop properly, now you can train them to sit. After walking your dog the trainer must command your dog to stop. Then use the command “SIT” and lifting the leash upwards. At the same time use your left hand and push your dog back side down on the ground. Do this a few times till your dogs know how to sit. Give them a praise every time they follow your instruction correctly.
Down on command
When your dog can sit properly, now you can train them to lie down. Firstly make your dog sit then use the command “DOWN”. At this time trainer must pull down the leash downwards and use your left hand pushing your dog shoulders down. Do this a few time till your dog can lie “DOWN” by themselves without trainers pushing the dogs shoulder.
Stay on command
After your dog can follow “SIT” and “DOWN” command, to teach your dog to stay is easy. Use the command “STAY” with a right hand signal facing your forehand to your dog, do this with one step forward and face your dog. If your dog starts to follow, the trainer must use the command “NO” and use the “STAY” command right away. Do this training over and over again and every time increase the distance between you and your dog and don’t forget to praise them when they do correctly.
